How to Find Your Interior Design Style

When it comes to interior design, there are lots of options to choose from. So, how do you go about finding your interior design style?  If you’re not sure where to start, we can help you figure out and implement your design style.

Because it’s important to know what you like and dislike when decorating and designing your home, especially if you want your home to feel like an extension of you.

Here’s what you need to get started when it comes to finding your interior design style:

Be faithful to your own taste, because nothing you really like is ever out of style.

1. Think About Color

The most important thing to remember when starting out is to stick to the basics—ask yourself whether you’re more drawn to lots of colors or if you prefer neutrals or grayscale.

2. Look At Lots Of Pictures

Look at all of the pictures and images on Pinterest or Houzz and even in magazines like Architectural Digest. Once you’ve pinned, favorited, and clipped the images you love, look at every piece of inspiration and start to connect the dots. Are there any common themes that come up? Are any of the pins you saved similar? Stick to the aesthetic you’re drawn to.

3. Browse In-Person

With online shopping being so prevalent these days, this step may be a little harder to take but try to visit home furniture stores or even your closet design center store. You can even browse antique stores and Restoration Hardware. Doing this is going to help you recognize your interior design style more, and you may even be surprised by what catches your eye.

4. Play “This or That”

Forcing yourself to pick just one interior design style could be a recipe for total overwhelm. Instead, choose between different sets of adjectives and construct a design style from there. For example, do you prefer cool or warm? Sparse or accessorized? Soft materials or hard surfaces? Patterns or solids? Some of the most interesting living spaces are born from the meeting points between different textbook interior design styles.

5. Consider How You Live

Do you have pets or small children? If so, then you probably don't want to have a white sofa or even a sofa that is raised off of the ground (think lots of small toys rolling underneath!). What you want is a room designed to not only look beautiful but to function—your space should work to serve the needs and lifestyle of everyone who is living in that space.

6. Contemplate Your Comfort Level

Just as much as you think about what design style will function and work within your home, you should also be thinking about what design style you’ll want to live with day in and day out.  Consider what you truly love and not just what you think you’re supposed to go for.

7. Pick A Style That Feels Right For You

Remember, decorate for you! Interior design is not for other people. And if you need advice on what interior design style is right for you, you can always ask a professional Interior Designer
