A Day in the Life of an Interior Designer

As an interior designer, I can say firsthand that no two days are the same. In our last blog post, we explored what interior designers do, and today, we’re looking at an actual day in the life of an interior designer. So here’s a behind-the-scenes glimpse at what my day-to-day looks like!

It’s About Process as Much as It’s About Design

Every day looks different than the one before, but most days can consist of any of the following:

Design Tasks

Admin Tasks

  • Budgeting and managing project timelines for design projects

  • Visiting project sites to oversee progress and ensure designs are implemented correctly

  • Communicating regularly with clients to provide updates and address any concerns

  • Managing administrative tasks such as billing, invoicing, and project documentation

Business Tasks

  • Taking continuing education courses to stay on top of the latest design trends and to expand my own business practices

  • Attending business networking events within the community

  • Speaking at business and/or local events within the community

Like any business, you work in your business as much as you work on your business! And as a business owner, you wear lots of hats and get good at juggling lots of tasks!

Leveraging Opportunities that Come Your Way

As much as I love being an interior designer, I also love speaking about entrepreneurship and being a small business owner. In fact, a few weeks ago, I got the chance to speak at Career Day at a local high school. It was such an honor to present and speak to students who are getting ready to become adults and figuring out what they want to be when they grow up.

I spoke about being an interior designer and what it’s really like to be an entrepreneur. I had no idea there would be so much interest in the topic, and I learned right before I presented that the students were most interested in learning about my job as an interior designer!

We Get to Design Our Spaces and Our Days with Intention

Just as much as I believe in designing homes with intention, I believe that we get to design and set up our days with intention, too. How do you want to feel at the start of your day, during your workday, and at the end of the day? Make your intention clear and design your day to match.

The perk of being an entrepreneur is that you get to create what your specific day-to-day looks like. As a mom of two young children, this is crucial to me, and it’s why I’ve made sure to prioritize and create a good work/life balance. For me, this looks like attending a Barre class at 9:00 am on a Tuesday or going to my kids’ school to be a teacher’s helper on a Friday.

What’s the most important part of my day? I would say it’s remembering to do things that continue to spark my creativity. Being an interior designer is a creative job and you have to learn to take risks and find the confidence to step outside of your comfort zone.
