When to Consider a Primary Bedroom Remodel
Our environments have a profound impact on our health—mentally, emotionally, and physically—and that includes our homes. One study found that 40% of people who felt generally positive about their homes and their spaces saw a positive impact on their mental health.
And what rooms in our homes do we spend the most time in? Most likely, it’s the primary bedroom, primary bath, or the kitchen, so we want to make sure those spaces work for us.
But what I see so often in client homes is that most of us tend to neglect these spaces; we especially tend to neglect the primary bedroom. It might be because it’s where you sleep, but when was the last time you got a good night’s rest? If you are considering a remodel, then you want to consider a primary bedroom remodel and how you want your bedroom to feel
Think About How Your Bedroom Makes You Feel
Can beautiful aesthetics and wellness go hand-in-hand in your home? This was a topic I got the chance to speak on at the Boulder Chamber of Commerce this month. The audience in attendance lit up with curiosity and excitement as I dived into what wellness in the home means with a focus on three specific rooms—the primary bedroom, the primary bath, and the kitchen.
Let’s talk facts—you start and end your day in your bedroom so it should be a rejuvenating space. It should be a place for serenity and rest and where you come to recharge.
When it comes to your primary bath, it should be a space dedicated to well-being and personal care. This is a space meant for the promotion of ultimate relaxation and health and wellness.
And no matter the size of your home, the kitchen is always the heart. It’s the room where you gather, where you eat, and where you have conversations. It nourishes us from the inside out.
Since we couldn’t cover all three rooms in full detail, we focused our attention on the primary bedroom, with me asking the audience, “How does your bedroom make you feel?”
How Wellness and Design Are Actually Connected
I gave everyone three minutes to write down their answers. After the three-minute exercise, most people wanted to know the following when it came to updating their bedrooms:
What are the best pillows to use, and where do you find them?
How often should you flip your mattress or replace your pillows?
How do you get started with adding art to your bedroom walls?
Are there suggestions for how to organize a cluttered nightstand?
What are some tips for creating better bedroom organization?
And these were great questions! Because when it comes to creating wellness in your primary bedroom’s design, you want to take into consideration the following:
The lighting in your bedroom (i.e., natural light and the lamps you use)
The colors you choose to use in your bedroom and how they make you feel
The atmosphere you want to create—think candles, aromatherapy, music, plants, art
What kind of mattress, bedding, sheets, and pillows you’re using
How you want to organize your space with end tables or bookshelves
How you want to create a no-screen zone in your bedroom (i.e., reducing electronics)
The exercise got a number of audience members thinking about their bedroom in a new light. And what hit home the most was this—when we remodel or renovate our homes, do we ever ask ourselves if our bedrooms should be considered, or do we only think about other rooms?
When we looked at this more, everyone was in agreement that it made sense to consider a primary bedroom remodel so that you can have a place to retreat to for peace and serenity.
Because interior design is more than design. It’s more than beautiful aesthetics—it’s a feeling we evoke within a client’s home for them—a feeling they didn’t even know existed before.
Home Craft Design is here to bring forth both wellness and design within your home.
